Reef Sharks and Rays

This week we’ve be visiting Moorea and Tahiti in French Polynesia. We had a house by the reef and lagoon. There were two kayaks at the house so we could paddle out into the lagoon. There was a shallow, sandy area where there were black-tipped reef sharks and rays. We got to get out of the kayaks and swim with them. We could swim up to and touch the rays. Some of them would get so close that it was like getting a hug from the ray. Their wings were about 5 feet across and they had a long, skinny tail. Their mouth is underneath them. They are black on the top and white on the bottom. We couldn’t touch the reef sharks. There were both big and small sharks. The biggest were about 6-feet long. They were gray with white stripes and black on the tips of their fins. They looked like great-white sharks but smaller. We weren’t scared at all. The sharks don’t hurt people. On Friday, we took a snorkeling trip to the lagoonarium. We got to snorkel with the sharks and rays again but this time we also saw a lot of fish. There were rainbow fish, there were small fish, there were huge fish, one was gray with purple polka dots, there some that were bright yellow, and some that were white and gray and swam in big schools. There was a big coral reef and the fish hid in the little caves. We watched a Tahitian man feed them and ride on the rays. Of all of our fish adventures, I liked touching the rays best.
