A couple of weeks ago we went to the Invercargill Kakapo Recovery Center and saw some kakapo babies. These native birds are almost extinct but the people in NZ are helping them come back. Kakapos are big green parrots that can't fly. There are only 132 left in the world and we saw four babies! They look cute and chubby with funny looking beaks. They are really big and fluffy. They are nocturnal and they know how to stay away from hawks because they can camouflage themselves but they can't stay away from stoats and cats easily because they have a really strong smell that smells like perfume. They look cute and fluffy. When the babies grow bigger the Center will move them to some predator free islands on the southern coast of New Zealand. Kakapos are awesome!
